Madalen O. Salls, 93, a longtime resident of Union, NJ, passed away on Friday June 2, 2017.
Madalen's visitation will be Tuesday June 6th, from 6:00-8:00PM at Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Ave. Cranford. Please go to: www.grayfuneralhomes.com to offer condolences. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:15AM Wednesday June 7, 2017 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1212 Kelly St., Union, NJ, where Madalen had been active in the parish community. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
Formerly of Irvington, Madalen was the beloved wife of the late: Albert H. Salls. She is survived by two sons: Richard Salls (Ellen), Jeffrey Albert Salls (Janet), and two grandsons: Richard J., and Michael C. Salls.

Madalen grew up in Newark NJ and moved to Irvington for several years after she was married. She lived in Union for 60 years, raising two sons with her husband Albert. Madalen had a mathematical mind and enjoyed working with numbers. She was her husband's bookkeeper in the family business, Metro Welding Co. in Newark NJ. She became an administrative secretary at Kean University for 27 years after raising her family. She received an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree from the university in February 2000. Retiring not long after her husband passed in 1998, she remained very active in life. As a parishioner at St. Michael Church in Union, Madalen was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and teacher of converts. Always seeking to expand her education, she took many theological courses at Seton Hall University. She was engrossed in researching her family ancestry, and she compiled a book tracing her Ukrainian family genealogy after years-long efforts. Madalen loved her Siamese cats, and she had one or more in the house all through her adult life. Her beloved SimQu, a chocolate point, was with her almost to the end. Madalen enjoyed dining out, reading, and she was always in front of the television for her 10 o'clock news. She enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends. She had a zest for life and was best known for her saying, "One day at a time!"
The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers celebrating Madalen's long and happy life.
